How to avoid cliche scares in a short horror movie?

For example
- the swinging medicine cabinet’s mirror to reveal a disfigured face which a moment ago was normal
- As the music builds to a climax character moves the shower curtains to find nothing there and music stops but then he turns around and there is something behind him

These are just off the top of my head, pretty much anything I think of had already been done and feels cheap. Note I have to keep my scares inside the house
Do you have any suggestions or original ideas for scares.

That’s a difficult thing to do and I applaud you for wanting to step away from the usual cut and paste formula. Really, it’s not the circumstances, but the fact that cheap/fake out scares are just done to death, so no matter how creative you make it, it’s STILL a cheap scare. Try moving away from the formula if you want to go for genuine fright. A slow, building tension is just as good if not better than a sudden fright. Even if the fright still leads nowhere, tension leading up to it can often be far more effective than the delivery itself Hope that helps.
