What does it take to be an astronaut? Are there any programs for teens that are interested in this field?

Ok… here’s my next dilemma… I really really want to be an astronaut… or something in that field. I know… that some of you might say that I will change my mind… but believe me.. that sort isnt the case. ANYWAYS… what would I have to do? So far… I’m trying to get the best GPA that I can (4.0.. but my friend has a 5.3), I dont listen to loud music, I’m saving up for lasik eye surgery, I’m reading tons of books about this field and female astronauts. What else.. oh, I try to learn about anything and everything… I write a ton of books about a wide variety of subject… I map the stars in my free time and I have absolutley no social life. I want to learn how to pilot a aircraft rather than drive a car, all I want for Christmas is a telescope and a meteor shower.. and I play Starcraft. Is there anything else I need? And I’m being serious… I’m only 14… so I have like… 10 – 20 more years until this might actually happen. I need to do EVERYTHING that I can. Please?

First off, I’d suggest reading not just NASA’s website, but reading about other national science programs (i.e. European, Chinese, Canadian, etc.).

Secondly, being a well-rounded person is probably going to help you out more than being anti-social and only book smart. Get out there. Get involved in the community. Picking up hobbies such as rock climbing, SCUBA diving, and other sports are great. Also, obtaining a pilot’s licence is nice, but not a necessity. Experience in parachuting is desirable.

I’d hold off with the lasik eye surgery. Right now people who undergo eye surgery are immediately disqualified from becoming an astronaut. Besides that, you’re only 14. Your eyes will continute to change until mid-20′s.

As for the GPA, A’s are definitely a good goal. Never heard of a 5.3 GPA but I guess you’re on a different system. Understanding a variety of subjects is important. A second language can also be a bonus. Obtaining at least two post-undergraduate degrees is desirable.

One of the most important things, however, that you should know is that MOST if not ALL of the applicants who are applying to become an astronaut are superb candidates and are excellent in their field. Interviewers are LOOKING for ways to disqualify the applicant.

Best thing to do is, stay out of trouble with the law, study a variety of subjects that YOU find interesting, keep healthy (physically and mentally), and have a social life.

Developing personally is extremely important, if not, more important than memorizing facts in a textbook. So, consider volunteering and joining a club or group of some kind. That way you can have fun while developing interpersonal skills. Astronauts are part of a team. They are the hands and eyes of many, many, scientists and engineers.
