Drop Music, Arts and PE and Health from Educational curriculum?
I’m so annoyed by our curriculum here in the Philippines… We study the most absurd and ridiculous things in a subject called MAPEH, which is an amalgamation of the 4 subjects above. I don’t think it should be imperative to know about the Thai meter, or who the heck Bela Bartok is and to be graded according to artistic ability. You’re born with it!!! It should be optional for people to learn about Music and Art, and PE!!! Although Health is important, that is the home’s obligation to educate a child!!!
Actually I have to disagree. I think it is important to expose our children to music and art and physical education and health and other interesting subjects.
While every person may not be talented in a certain subject, it is the exposure and knowledge and just plain learning. Plus, there is also the fact that, what if you do not have a chance to learn these subjects outside of school? There are some families who just do not have the money or even knowledge of these topics. That is why we send children to school.
What if during one of these lessons, there happens to be one or two or three students that just really get this subject and become the next big thing in art or music or etc?
We may not like everything we have to learn in school, and kids may think it is unimportant, but in the end, it does matter because it makes you a more well-rounded individual.
Also keep in mind – life is about learning. Even out in the workforce, you will be required to learn new and different things all the time. Some things we appreciate and others we do not, but at least we had the opportunity to learn, which is more than I can say for many less fortunate than you or I.
